But I couldn't even keep track of how many times I thought I was doing something wrong only to look up a walkthrough and realize that Trico just wasn't responding to me. You eventually learn to communicate via commands and you actually need to experiment with your environment in order to progress. See, the primary mechanic is to traverse this giant valley-prison thing with your new best friend. But I felt frustration more than any other emotion with this game. I mean, I felt sympathy for the boy and Trico at times. It was honestly great.īut then it just sort of went downhill from there. Basically, without trying to spoil anything, you're stuck in a desperate situation, have to take a leap of faith, only to be saved at the very last moment. I got so frustrated with the first few parts of the game that I considered being done with it, but I pushed through and made it to the bridge scene.

This was actually my favorite part of the game. The game encourages you to form this bond with Trico, the beast, and focuses on how that evolves. You wake up in a dingy cave next to a giant beast who you have to work with to eventually escape whatever prison-like place you're in. I knew you would have to bond with this creature and that it was a platformer sort of game.Īs far as I know, nothing is really explained to you at the beginning of the game. I had heard some good things about it but never really watched any gameplay. I went into this game completely blind and, to be honest, a little excited.

I also didn't care for Shadow of the Collossus either. I only ever heard about it maybe a little before it was finally released. For context, I didn't follow this game when it was first announced. I initially thought about making a long rant post about it but I guess I just want to understand what makes it such a critically acclaimed game.

The duo made it through by working together, and by then I felt like I had more of an insight into the bond between the two-something I cannot wait to see more of.I just finished this game yesterday and full disclosure, I didn't like it. As would be typical of ruins, it wasn't long before the level begun to fall apart, turning the game into a race to safety. The protagonist seemed to order the otherwise autonomous creature around by calling out commands. When the two were separated by obstacles, the creature would whine like an adorably sad puppy. It was equal parts unexpected and adorable, with the boy climbing the creature's back as it moved seemingly autonomously. It missed, but its tail swung forward to allow the player to grab on and climb to safety.

A particular highlight featured the player character sailing slowly through the air after a particularly high jump, and the creature reacted by making a reach to save the player by catching him with its mouth. Leaping through the air from a platform would be otherwise suicidal, if it weren't for the large creature accompanying the player. But it wasn't just moving physical objects around to get to the finish line the protagonist made incredibly risky jumps from up high, with slow-motion augmenting the apprehension I felt at watching him sail through the air. Set in the ruins of a temple-like locale in the mountains, the player pushed large physical obstructions to make their way through the level. The trailer featured the familiar boy we've seen in previous trailers, who worked together with a large pet-like creature to overcome hazardous obstructions to survive.
